It is only when you have lived in a home with no storage that you appreciate how important it is to have. These days, most new home builders and designers are very good at including built in robes, linen cupboards, and sufficient cabinetry in bathrooms, laundries and kitchens. They know how much emphasis is placed on good storage by the astute client.
But if you are in an existing home, or have specific storage needs, then consider some clever ways clutter can be hidden away for when it is needed:
ROOF SPACE STORAGE
There are a number of companies in Perth that provide roof space storage solutions. It is a great way to put items away but still have ready access. Creating an attic space for other purposes like an art studio or loft space requires Council Approval. Because you are effectively creating another storey to your home, you would need a smoke detector, adequate light and ventilation, and insulation to maintain the energy efficiency of the space.
UNDER STAIR STORAGE
Consider enclosing under an open stair to provide another area where items can be stored. Under-stair storage is a neat and practical way to use an otherwise dead space.
GARAGE SOLUTIONS
Garages are often cluttered with bikes, sports equipment and general household junk. Slim-line cabinets can be installed between brick piers (must be moisture resistant) and hooks to hang items from the wall or ceiling.
FIT OUT YOUR EXISTING STORAGE AREAS
Although you may have enough storage space, the space may only comprise of a single shelf and rail. Depending on how you use the room, the efficiency of the storage area can be vastly improved by customizing the space for your needs.
GARDEN SHED
This is often the place we stack our lawn mower, gardening tools, half-used fertilizer bags and children’s bikes. It is often a neglected area that can provide great storage for items that are not affected by moisture. Invest in a concrete slab floor and some metal shelving units, and perhaps a bench for any projects. Keep it locked, and keep check of items stored that might be dangerous or have a limited shelf life.
SPARE ROOM OR JUNK ROOM
Converting a small spaceInstead of having a spare room or junk room, consider converting a small bedroom or study nook into a storage area that includes built in features for the room like a hot-desk or work station, but that also provides sturdy shelving, cupboards and drawers. There are so many flat-pack style units available that can tidy up area quite cheaply and add value to your home.
