  1. CFMME(V) Matters

CFMME(V) secretary, John Setka, was relieved last week when the Victorian Police withdrew blackmail charges against him in connection with union action against Boral. The ACTU wants an inquiry into the matter, forgetting the CFMMEU(V) has paid out $8m in union members funds, with legal fees on top of that, for its unlawful conduct against Boral in recent years. Notably, the CFMMEU(V) is not pursuing the Victorian Police for legal costs, which are significant, suggesting the union is more than happy with that outcome, despite its strong claims of victimisation.

  2. Drug and Alcohol Abuse

Master Builders met last week with the WA Mental Health Commission to explore opportunities to work together to get the message out to the building industry about the dangers of drug/alcohol abuse to the individual, fellow workers and others.

  3. Trucking Contractor Fined

A trucking contractor pleaded guilty last week after failing to provide a safe workplace, which resulted in the death of 2 construction workers in November 2015, at a Perth CBD construction site. Fines and costs of $162,200 were imposed. Worksafe advises it is pursuing 2 other charges connected with the incident which Master Builders understands does not include the builder.
