  3. Portable long service leave conference

    Director Michael McLean will be accompanying several other members of the MyLeave Board at this year’s national conference of portable long service leave authorities in Canberra. Every state and territory has its own scheme to enable workers in the building and construction industry to accrue entitlements based on their industry service.   4. ABCC meeting

    A cross-section of commercial builder members met with ABCC Commissioner, Steve McBurney in Perth last week. The ABCC has been very successful in prosecuting unions and some of their officials for right of entry and picketing breaches, with higher penalties now applicable. The ABCC dealt with nearly 7,000 enquiries over the last 12 months. Phone the ABCC on 1800 003 338 if required.

    The Westin Hotel will be hosting our Apprentice of the Year Awards for the first time on 2 November. Click here to attend. The Ric New Medal and Rising Star Award will also be presented at this popular function.

  6. Suicides rise

    Telethon has allocated much-needed funds for research into youth suicide. Suicide accounts for 44 per cent of deaths in people aged 13 to 17 and 33 per cent of deaths in people 17 to 25. These shocking statistics reinforce the benefits of builders utilising MATES in Construction to raise awareness of mental health issues among their workforce.
